We make important purchasing decisions every day, whether we’re buying groceries or a new outfit for tonight’s dinner. With our purchase, we choose to support the companies that make that certain must-have item. The problem with it all is that we usually don’t know where companies stand, unless you follow them closely, or something happens and they’re in the news for something major. Until companies are more transparent with their actions and positions…how do we know if the company we are support shares our values?
Buycott is a free app designed to help us consumers align our spending with our political and philanthropic views. This app helps us know which companies to support and who to avoid entirely. Whether you’re supporting GMO-labeling or Gay rights or against Animal Testing, etc… whichever cause is dear to your heart… Buycott helps you decide which companies to support.
Start by downloading the Buycott app. Then browse through all the campaigns and choose which ones you want to participate in. Once you’ve chosen your campaigns, scan a product to determine if the company either supports or against your campaigns. See more below:
“When you use Buycott to scan a product, it will look up the product, determine what brand it belongs to, and figure out what company owns that brand (and who owns the company). It will then cross-check the product owners against the companies and brands included in the campaigns you’ve joined, in order to tell you if the scanned product conflicts with one of your campaign commitments.” – Source: Buycott.com
You can also use the app to look up brands and see their political affiliations also. Keep in mind that Buycott is new and relies on crowdsourced information, so not all the information is 100% accurate, but most of it is. That said, this is a great starting point to start aligning with the companies who agreed with you and avoid companies who are against your cause.
I have found this app has helped me make better choices and avoid companies who are against my values. Whether we think it our not…our dollars make a powerful statement.
“Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean” – Ryunosuke Satoro
Let’s be an ocean, and join forces against the companies who are against our cause…
